Cantonese with Brittany

Cantonese Vlog | RV Roadtrip Part Two: Texas to California 🇺🇸

A native of Toronto, Brittany has been making videos for Cantonese learners in the overseas Chinese community since 2020. She has a YouTube channel and her videos cover a wide range of fun activities and important topics relevant to the Cantonese Diaspora. She’s donated almost 30 videos to us, and what makes these videos extra special is that they have written Cantonese and Jyutping subtitles, making it easier for learners to follow.  All of the videos will be available to members when the Cantonese Alliance of North America is launched. Below, you’ll find the titles of some of these videos.

Brittany's Videos for Beginning Learners

There are two popular Cantonese Romanization systems: Yale and Jyutping.  Yale was developed in the 1950s and was the preferred system in Cantonese textbooks for many decades.  Jyutping was developed by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong (LSHK) in the 1990s and has become prevalent by now. The two systems are quite similar; once you’ve learned one system, it’s easy to learn the other.

In the following two videos, Brittany teaches the consonants and tone combinations in Jyutping.

In the following videos, Brittany helps you build the basic vocabulary and grammar in Cantonese as well as how to make suggestions.  The vocabulary is presented in phrases or sentences and is supported by written Cantonese, Jyutping, and English translation.

The pictures are helpful and colorful while the pronunciation is very clear.
